Are there any people interested in starting one?
VN aren't my forte.
I'm planning to work on one by myself, but I'd be willing to help out in editing/beta testing/ONScripter programming if needed.
So long as it doesn't become one of those Ren'py poops :/
I'm too lazy to move my own plans past the rough outlining stage, but if anyone wants editing/beta testing/ONScripter programming as above I would be happy to do that for you.
Sage, for that is completely useless.
OP here. I'm the guy that posted about the sidescrolling VN idea on the current /jp/ OC thread
Currently I don't have much to show and I pretty much need everything (aside from art, which I plan to do), but what little I came up with has been stored on a wiki. Maybe if you're interested I can provide a link.
I wouldn't mind contributing to one.
I can write, can work with graphics, and know how to put together VNs using Blade Engine, Renpy, and Novelty.
Of the three I'd prefer to use Novelty.
I still don't know what you mean by sidescrolling. By sidescrolling do you mean video game sidescrolling? Like this:
Novelty isn't mature enough yet in a lot of areas, but it's come a long way.
Your character designs are extremely lacking in moe.
So would the main character be controllable or something? As in you can move around from different houses and stuff? If so, that sounds more like an adventure game than a VN.
I'm under the impression that VNs are only reading games.
The wiki says it's a dating sim. Map movement in dating sims isn't all that special. Go play Kingdom for an example of a dating sim with map movement.
I'm assuming you speak of Koisuru Oukoku. I'm familiar with the game.
One thing I haven't mentioned in the wiki yet is that I plan to include some sort of gameplay, in the form of boss battles to justify the interface and tie-in the shounen-esque aspect of the plot. I'm thinking of gameplay like Crescent Pale Mist and/or Mystical Chain (something to combine hack and slash with danmaku elements).
I know this is a might tall order for my first project, but since my previous one failed and it was meant to be a regular VN, I might as well try this.
My previous project was the Virus VN thing some of you might have heard of, which explains the lack of moe. I volunteered for the art but the thing never went anywhere due to lack of leadership and writers.
Just for the record:
Dating Sim ≠ Visual Novel ≠ Adventure Game ≠ RPG
They are closely related though.
I'm unfamiliar with the scripting languages that are used in VN engines, but is it even possible to code gameplay with them?
Renpy uses Pyton, that should be possible.
Yes, it is. Menu based stuff is fairly simple. For an example, there's Touhou Pocket wars or Touhou Dreamer's Party (there should be videos for both on Youtube. They are written in KiriKiri). Something like an STG or side scroller would probably be damn near impossible. I get the feeling that a 'sidescrolling VN' would benefit more from a generic sidescroller engine than a generic VN engine. Assuming one exists, at least; if not then you'll need to make it from scratch.
Ever since those guys released that Dandy Girl project I've been thinking about writing my own short little tale. It'd probbably wind up being one of those terrible Ren'py games, if it ever happened at all, but at least I would have tried, right?
Just to let you guys know, you have to get your project started before people can help. If you're an artist start working on the character and background (concept) art. Likewise if you're a programmer or artist start working on the VN framework or story.
Like people say, better to try and fail than not try at all. Just do something, anything.
I've been working on an eroge script recently. I've finished the rough draft of the first route, and I've passed 30k words (close to 40k total but that includes non-protagonist speaker tags) so I thought now would be a good time to see if people were interested in helping make it into an actual game. I'd imagine I'm under 25% done with my scenario but I don't want to write the whole thing only to find that I won't be able to actually do anything with it. All I can do it write (even that is debatable) so if you're interested I'm sure there's something for you to do.
To talk a little about my scenario, it all takes place over the course of a single day. It incorporates a couple of ideas I've wanted to see in an eroge. First every choice leads to a completely separate plot branch, meaning there are lots of routes and ends. Second the different routes cover different genres, like school life romcom, mahou shoujo, mecha, and horror. The closest thing to an overarching genre would be comedy with perhaps a little parody, as I've been using this script as an outlet while I work on my "more serious" writing.
In short I want to make an eroge and can use all the help I can get. So if you want to make an eroge too then join in. I don't know how many people still check this board but I can't think of many places to find serious, like-minded people.
Sounds pretty directionless if you ask me. Post some of your writing, none of us will be interested if we don't know anything about it except that it's directionless.
Post your script in a Google Doc and allow for comments. If you're comfortable with that.
I've never used Google Docs and I'm about to go to bed so I don't want to try to figure it out right now (and I'm guessing it's connected to your Google account so I'd have to make a new one). Link is most of what I have so far for the common route of the school life section, since it's the largest block of text early in the game. Password is bun.
So after my last post I didn't do any work on my script for awhile, not that people seemed particularly interested in it (or maybe it's just Projects' low traffic). Anyways, I recently picked it back up and pounded out a few thousand more words.
I also finished the last bad end for the route that was otherwise complete (mahou shoujo route) so I'll post the route in its entirety.
To account for choices I have it set up where you read a word document then open the folder for the choice you want to make at the end of the document, then read the file in the folder and repeat. It should make sense when you see it. Some of the early choices aren't available since you're railroaded onto a route.
Same password as before.
