I'd round her face a bit more instead of keeping that spike on her cheek, and remove the last pixel of her bangs as it made me think she has heterochromia. Losening up her limbs a little bit would help the sprite not look as stiff. Try using different colors for the skin tone, remember the coloration of an object depends not only on its pigmentation but also on the reflecting colors surrounding it.

Today I made this aquatint so I decided to take pictures of the process for those who are not familiar with this technique. I should probably mention I'm falling asleep so the text might not make sense.

This pose is much more dynamic, but it looks a bit off-balance. The right knee is too big and the left foot looks weird. The shading on the pants looks nice, but adding a slightly lighter version of that blue for lighting would make it look even better. Not much, just some bits on the folds that are supposed to be standing up more.

Thank you for your kind words. Yes, that is Claudia, I'm surprised and happy you could recognize her!

Oh, I heard of a similar technique where one draws on a metal plate with magic marker and then gives it a brief bath in sulfuric acid. The marker protects part of the surface and so you get a very nice two-color plate as a result.
I assume this is the same principle at work, chemically?

>>37300
I think that'd be more comparable to the sugar lift technique, since you end up with two tones only (the plate's and the affected area's) though in this one, what you draw is actually what will end up being corroded by the acid.

A mixture of ink and sugar (we used honey instead) is used to draw on the plate. After it dries, a special varnish is applied to the surface to cover it completely, and then the plate is put under water for the ink with sugar to dissolve, but not the varnish. The now clean area on the plate is the only thing that will be affected by the acid.

It's okay to mix techniques like in this picture, if only to give the work more depth.

So apparently my tablet is pressure sensitive, I did not know this. It is like a wild beast, hard to best.
Is there a trick to making clean lines? Mine are a little squiggly and I do not like it at all. Also the tip of my tablet pen is starting to get really worn down, is this supposed to happen? I use a Wacom Bamboo.
>> No.39791
>>39790
I can't get smooth lines for the life of me either, but FWIR, you just get better with practice, and using SAI's stabilizer function. As for the tip, yes it's supposed to wear down. There should be ~3 replacement tips in the box. At least mine came with replacement tips. I'm also curious as to how you didn't know the pen was not pressure sensitive for so long (guessed from your tip having worn down a fair amount already).
>> No.39792
>>39790
There should be a Wacom Tablet Properties program that came along with the tablet where you can experiment with different pressure sensitivity settings until you (hopefully) find something that works for you.

If you draw in SAI, like the poster above me said, you could try different Stabilizer settings, but also try to learn to "draw" on Linework Layers. Lines drawn in Linework Layers can be manipulated and adjusted by holding down the Shift and/or Ctrl keys. I find it somewhat tedious, but it's the way to go for cleaner lines.

For you to draw detailed human shape, you need to understand its construction. Start by drawing real people with geometric shapes. I know the whole "draw the structure" sounds stupid and maybe too formal for your anime drawings, but it's useful for understanding proportions. It's not just about making circle heads or triangle hips, either. You should take one of your model's parts, the head being the most common choice, and use it as reference when drawing the body. How many heads tall is the person I'm drawing? How many heads long is his or her arm? It's important not to focus on one body part as reference, also check with other parts to make sure proportions are correct.

Sometimes the drawing will seem correct. but when you check making an imaginary line upwards you might realize something might be positioned wrong. I'm a real retard at explaining but see the picture for examples of this. I threw random lines around to check where the parts are placed. I think this is particularly useful. Sometimes the drawing will seem weird and no matter how much you measure it it will look like the proportions are right, but simply checking using lines will help you understand the problem, especially when working on foreshortening, where proportion rules don't help much.

Also, if the woman in the picture was standing perfectly straight the measures would be different obviously. Drawing is more about perception than anything.

I'm not going to tell you to learn all the "rules" of drawing human figure, because you probably won't care for that or get lazy and skip it because you're not aiming at a realistic style, but I do think it's important to learn from real life. Rather than following what a book says or looking at pictures to use as reference, it's best to sit on a bench in a park and draw the people who walk by or sit around. Since they're not going to wait for you to finish your drawing it'll also help improve your speed and loosen your lines, as well as economize movements.

I feel like I wanted to say more things but I forgot what it was. I hope this helps you somewhat. If there's something confusing about my post please feel free to ask.

I've been basing my attempts on anatomy around geometry up till now, actually. I haven't heard about using different body parts as reference before, I'll try that out next time. And yes, I'm just drawing as a hobby. I'm not aiming to be a pro or anything, but I agree that it would be smart to learn everything correctly.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silverpoint

This is my first attempt at using this technique. It was made today so the characteristic oxidation isn't present yet. I think I'll invest on a sketchbook with proper, good quality paper and prepare all the pages to be able to regularly use silverpoint.

That is really good! As someone who is really bad at drawing I've always had great respect for animators who not only have to draw well, but quickly and in great quantities. Are you planning to do the rest of the cast?

Thank you for your kind words bunfriend. I might come back to it after I finish some other works. I was going to recreate the entire jumping sequence, but when I finished the lines I realized how much work that would be and how little time I had to finish (it's a birthday present), so I decided to settle for just this.

I think it'd look a lot better on 2s (holding each frame for 2/24). It goes by way fast.

It's been a long time since I watched show, but I think it looks better slowed down. Are you planning on going further with or are you happy with it as is? Adding a frame when he's at the top might look cool.

Where did you learn how to do textures like that?
>> No.49072
>>49067
I can't say really. I've always had an affinity for artists that rely on crosshatching or lines to define volumes and shadows or even movement, like Doré and Goya or Miura and Morikawa if you want manga examples. I'm studying printmaking and I am most fond of techniques that rely on lines for grayscales rather than on solid areas.

Thank you for giving it a listen!

Also, LOL, the meaning I intended there was "descend from a train, bus, or other form of transport." The fire meaning didn't even cross my mind, since we almost never use it that way here. Maybe it's just a cultural thing. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

D-did the joke flew over my head...?
