The next season is almost upon us, and thus it is time for a new thread.

Fate/Zero is about the only must-watch in there for me.
Might take Upotte, Hyouka, Tasogare OxA, Jormungand, Acchi Kocchi and Nazo no Kanojo for a spin, see if they're any good, though I don't expect any of them to blow me away.

The whole season looks a bit average, really, but someone winds up saying that every season, so whatever.

Ozuma - Matsumoto original work? Who isn't watching this
Saint Seiya - Umakoshi? Who isn't watching this
Uchuu Kyoudai - Real people doing real things. Fucking finally, school life can die.
Eureka 7 AO - Probably will only watch the sakuga clips, this will most likely suck apart from that.
Hyouka - see above
Sakamichi no Apollon - I said before that school life can die, but this is Watanabe and Kanno. Pretty much a must watch.
Tsuritama - See above but with Nakamura Kenji
Lupin III - Any fan of anime should be watching this

Most likely to watch
Ozuma
Uchuu Kyoudai
Fate/Zero S2
Korewa Zombie Desuka: I don't even know why.
Jormungand: Koko getting animated, by White Fox? Fuck yes. My only worry is that the manga has a great art style and that the anime version might be underwhelming.
KIKANSHA THOMAS
Sakamachino Apollon: Kanno

May watch
Sengoku Collection
Upotte!!
Tasogare Otome X Amnesia
Hyouka
Sankarea

I personally enjoyed the comedy the best out of season 1. Hopefully they drop all fanservice. And also drop the characters I don't like whilst they're at it.

Only interested in Lupin and Mysterious Girlfriend X.
>> No.40097
Let's see, I'll definitely take a look at:
Saint Seiya, because duh, Umakoshi.
Hyouka, hurm. I'm hoping this doesn't turn into moeblob shenanigans, but KyoAni might be a lost case by now.
Jormungand, sounds cool, hopefully it will be kickass.
Saki, Nodoka and Saki were the two characters I disliked the most in the first season. Getting rid of them might make this the best thing ever.

I'm interested in these shows, but I don't know:
Girlfriend X, I liked the manga, but the main draw for me was the atmosphere and the artstyle. Not sure how well it's possible to emulate that in anime. Also, I've never heard of the studio before.
Tsuritama, a sci-fi fishing story!? Well, I would normally watch this, but the all-male cast and the possibility of yaoi is scaring me.
KoreZombie,

Saint Seiya Omega: Umakoshi's current occupation seems to be getting his team to take an established franchise and give it a new spin. It's Saint Seiya's turn now, after Heartcatch Precure's success. In fact, that one worked so well he's taken some souvenirs: Saints will now transform ala magical girls. Amazing!
If the leaks are true, this is going to have some really crazy and out of place stuff like a highschool for Saints. I'm not sure how to feel about that, but I was sold the moment I read Umakoshi's name. Whatever silly excuse of a plot it has won't be worse than any other SS storyline, so I'll just shut up and take my stylish Saints.

PV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZDVJlkzaVU

Uchuu Kyoudai: Now this is interesting. For starters, a seinen getting a +50 episodes adaptation isn't exactly common nowadays, even if we're talking about an award-winning work. To make it even better, the staff has a decent number of talented people: the Gainax legend Hiroshi Kato, Cowboy Bebop's Sound Director and Katanagatari's main scriptwriter. All of them under a fairly decent studio like A-1.
And the story itself isn't any less unique. It flows seamlessly from bizarre comedy to serious scenes. The comparisons with Planetes are quite spot-on even beyond the setting, though this is more down to Earth with its themes. So to say, less tripping balls about how big and scary space is. The characters are endearing and make the slice of life parts really enjoyable. What's there not to like?
Really, nothing called Space Bros can be bad.

PV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUB4ebxoYLI

Hiiro no Kakera: Reverse harem by DEEN, directed by the Hetalia/Gravitation dude. Not sure why would anyone watch this but then again I'm not good at being a fujoshi.

Kimi to Boku 2: This is more homo than the previous one and probably about as ~good~.

Yurumates 3D: Despite the title, not actually 3D. Newbies adapting a random 4koma. This might not even get subbed.

ZETMAN: Someone had to jump on Masakazu's train after Tiger and Bunny's success, I guess. Despite quite enjoying his romance stuff, I'm not sure if he's the right man to write a compelling tale about superheroes. Not like we'll ever find out, considering it's confirmed to be 13 episodes long. For an ongoing series with 16 volumes so far. I can already hear the fans of the manga crying over the upcoming original ending.
Sakuga fans ought to give it a try because Takaya is involved, though for all we know he could just have adapted the character designs.

PV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTqww3yzPTU

Quen's Blade Rebellion: Tits and stuff.

Naruto SD ~Something about Rock Lee's Youth~: Only listing this here to say this kicked Bleach out of TV. I heard its popularity was going down but didn't know it was that bad.

Ginga e Kikoff: I like football so I physically cannot enjoy football shows.

Gakkatsu: Another 5 minutes long flash thing. The promo pic has an angry girl and a bunny.

Arashi no Yoru ni: Adaptation of a furry book for children. Really fucking furry.

Kore wa Zombie Desu ka? of the Dead: The first season was quite nice whenever it sticked to comedy. Needless to say, it didn't for the most part. If those spoilers I'm hearing are true, this will have even more painfully stupid plot and less enjoyably stupid comedy. The only positive thing I can think of is that it's going to be 10 episodes long.

PV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXDIyBxwYAc

Lupin III ~Mine Fujiko to Iu Onna~: It's Lupin. With Koike in charge of the visuals. Sayo Yamamoto directing. Could it be any more perfect?
Yes, it could, if Mari Okada wasn't there at all. For those who don't know, she's to blame for stuff like BRS, Anohana or Iroha. Not quite the best writer, as you can see. It's been proved she can do a good job when she's surrounded by talented people so my hopes for this show are still really high. It's Lupin, goddamn.

Medaka Box: Lots of people have been asking just how dead is Gainax. And they probably will keep doing so after shis show has aired, since adaptations are hardly the way to judge this particular studio. The best possible outcome would be disregarding the source and just animating some ridiculous battles, since we know for a fact that Gainax's corpse is still capable of outputting amazing animation.
I've never been sure what to think about Medaka, most likely because the series itself doesn't know either. Maybe when it settles on one genre I'll decide.

PV where Toyosaki doesn't sound like Toyosaki at all: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xp2Px6aWQwo

Shirokuma Cafe: Something about a polar bear running a café.

Acchi Kocchi: Yet another 4koma. I think the gimmick in this one is terrible designs.

PV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCyfS1RjBpg

Sengoku Collection: Mandatory Sengoku show. No idea why brains base is doing this, no idea why Kenji Gotoh is directing this, no idea why some of the Penguindrum staff is working on this.

Sankarea: The source material is, while really gimmicky, still enjoyable. Definitely something to give a try to if you're interested in stories about zombies, though it's bound to feel unoriginal if you've read a fair share of those. Not a fan of love solves everything either, but lately the series has been going beyond that so there's still room for a decent ending.
And now imagine there's a rant about DEEN ruining everything here.

Natsuiro Kiseki: Idol Ads Part 1.

PV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2PW7gu9CKI

AKB00048: Idol Ads Part 2. This one has Kawamori so it could be entertaining.

Accel World: Let's start by its good aspects. The PV has some great looking fights. Now let's move onto the bad stuff. Like, everything else. The only non stereotypical trait of this series is the protagonist looking like a pig. Literally. I almost miss the bland looks of our average self-insert protag. The setting is uninteresting and so are the characters, with the exception of the main girl who happens to be a bit insane. Not like she's a good character at all, just a bit less boring than the rest.
It's bad. It just is. Sword Arts Online, that one thing by the same author that is actually enjoyable, will be adapted this summer so you're better off waiting for that.

PV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?&v=fCTotQgWcYk

Upotte: Gimmick 4koma by Xebec. Bad bad bad bad.

PV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5lxYW4ipRo

Fate Zero 2nd: Hopefully better than the first season. The terrible series composition and slow pacing that hurt S1 are going to help this time around, since all the interesting stuff is bound to happen now. Maybe they'll even stop dumping the LN and realize that's not what makes a good adaptation.
Tetsuya Takeuchi isn't busy with OVAs about lesbian aliens anymore so we might get him here, which would no doubt be great news as he is ufotable's best asset. Otherwise look forward to the debate about ufotable overusing filters instead of working on the animation. Again.
But what amuses me the most is how they're airing a two episode recap of S1. Did that have 45 minutes worth of content? Apparently it did.

Nazo no Kanojo X: Nothing Happens Ever: The Anime. Don't misunderstand me, I enjoy the series, but I've long since given up about it going anywhere. Hardly uncommon for romance manga, I might add.
Ayumu Watanabe's directing so we're bound to get interesting visuals.

PV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuCC3b8HvTc

Kuroko no Basket: Sweating males playing basketball.

Phi Brain S2: Why.

Tasogare Otome x Amnesia: I think this is the first SILVER LINK show directed by someone other than Oonuma (though he's still in the staff), and I've got to say I almost miss his Shinbo wannabe style. The PV really couldn't look any more bland, which is a pity because the manga has really pretty art.

PV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTnQ_ApJKUw

Saki Achiga-hen episode of side-A: I like Saki because of the blushing lesbians and the trailer has blushing lesbians so I will no doubt like this.

PV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4eKgwFBiyA

Nyarlko-san: Third iteration of moe Nyralathotep, this time around... not done in flash! But don't rejoice yet because Xebec is behind this. It never was any fun past the gimmick so I'm not expecting this to work well at all. Really good character designs, at least.

PV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5r1xUwiAms

Jormungand: Nice manga being adapted by White Fox. Staff hinting it won't have FPS syndrome like steins;gate. OP/ED by Kawada Mami and Nagi. While not amazing, this looks like it could be rather entertaining.

PV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vICtI_aYz4I

Sakamichi no Apollon: WATANABE+KANNO, THIS SHOULD BE ENOUGH OF AN EXPLANATION. Fuck yeah, noitaminA is back.

PV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8b8M4pO4tBs

Tsuritama: As a Nakamura fan, I'd rather pretend [C] never happened, so let's say this is his comeback to noitaminA after Trapeze. Good character designs and bright colour palette, I'm really digging the stylish visuals.
Yes, noitaminA really is back.

PV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTV_ct6Rwsw

Eureka Seven AO: Back when E7 aired, I felt a bit bad because a lot of people seemed to enjoy it much more than I did. Sure it had amazing animation, as well as some interesting characters, but most of the arcs either dragged on or felt simply useless. Then the movie was released and all the E7 fans got really mad because it was painfully stupid, while I just enjoyed how pretty it was. Do you know how glad I am now that it's getting some sort of sequel? God bless my twisted criteria.
Kazuo Nagai and Muraki working on it, sakuga is to be expected.

PV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IYpivWPcPU

Shining Hearts: VA porn.

Hyou-ka: After the trailer was released, I was stupid enough to look up what people thought about it. From "shitty keionified designs" (since everything Horiguchi does is K-ON, apparently) to "fucking KyoAni always doing the same crap" (despite this being their first mystery show), the range of retarded comments was amazing. Even complaints about the visuals, claiming that such simple designs just made animating easier.
The truth is that the PV had mind boggling animation. It's quite hard to believe this is going to be a TV series, but that's KyoAni for you. I've heard the novels are boring but at least we know it's going to be a feast for the eyes.

Probably due to it using the typical josei manga artstyle. Though I guess it doesn't help that the main male characters look like an archetypal seme and uke pair (One being large and boisterous, the other being small and timid).

>>40124
>and I have no idea how the hell the Tasogare Otome x Amnesia trailer looks 'bland'
The PV couldn't be any more visually dull, seriously. Really poor job on the character designs, no trace of good animation, abuse of panning and stupid shaky camera for what I assume is the opening. I wasn't really fond of Oonuma's work on Silver Link but those shows at least had a distinct look - even if it was a bad Shinbo ripoff.

>The art kind of reminds me of Deadman Wonderland, which I really liked.
The original character designs (as well as the source story) are by Masakazu, who drew the original designs for T&B. The guy who adapted those also worked on Deadman WOnderland's. Very loosely, but I guess they're somehow related.

>It looks really interesting to me. Is it really that bad?
There's nothing offensively bad other than the protag, but it just doesn't have anything good going for it. Even if you like the premise, there isn't enough action to make this decent. And even the fights are subpar, wasting a wide variety of abilities on boring battles.

Zetman episode 1 was wonderful. Shame about the spoilers in the ED, though, it would've been more interesting if I didn't know the things displayed there until they were actually revealed in the series.
>> No.40364
Zetman 01 was pretty bad. While the story itself might have some potential, the rushed execution makes the drama they were trying to go for feel forced and contrived. I don't know if the manga does it any better, but from a narrative perspective, this episode was just awful.

But I still enjoyed it a lot. It reminds me of those really cheesy hyperviolent 80's OVA - I think the hokiness of the storytelling only adds to my enjoyment. I especially got a kick out of the part where that guy and girl were talking about the recent killings, and the guy said something like, "They were cut right in half. I'd like to see that!" And then the monster splits him in half. Also, the part with little Zetman pushing his adoptive hobo grandpa's corpse around in a shopping cart trying to find a way to 'fix' him. It really doesn't get any more deliciously grimdark than that.

While the animation in most of the episode felt overly stiff, in the fight scenes it became more fluid, and stylized. Whoever is directing the action in this show is a genius. Though I do think the color pallet on this show is too bright. Just because you're animating it digitally doesn't mean you have to crank the brightness and kill the contrast.

If the ED is to be believed, this anime will turn into a violent tale of a test-tube superbaby who grows up to be a grimdark superhero and fight shape shifting mutants with the help of his rich friend who dresses up as kamen rider.

I think I'm going to really enjoy this show.

There are many things I love about the Lupin franchise, one of them being Lupin and Fujiko's interactions. Even when they somehow don't get them right like in Secret of Mamo, simply having both of them in the same scene tends to lead to fun outcomes. Needless to say, a whole episode of Fujiko and Lupin trying to outsmart each other was more than enough to make me fall in love with this Lupin iteration.

It helped that it looks unreal. We knew the designs were great, we guessed the animation would be good but no one expected them to pull something this stylish throughout. You did it again, Koike.

Sengoku Collection's character designs are incredibly hideous, but some people seem to like them so I'm pretty confused. Either way the production values are quite bad so not even Shibata was enough to make this look nice. Good palette though, it could be much more annoying to look at.

>>40387
So an episode that shamelessly rehashed the first one from S1 is enough for it to be the best so far? Recycled korezon jokes are better than Umakoshi's Seiya? They're enough to beat Lupin's strong comeback? Is it really better than Space Bros? Hell, even the goddamn mess ZETMAN is or a fucking 5 minutes flash thing like Gakkatsu are easily better than Korezon.
At least stop talking out of your ass, because the show looks like crap. Praising the animation is especially offensive considering this season has more sakuga and generally great looking shows than we've had in many years.

Can you please calm down? Zetman was rubbish, as I had expected. Lupin was cool... 30 years ago. The only people I see thinking this Lupin series is great, are the people that were already Lupin fans. Saint Seiya, like Lupin, only really rides on its nostalgia. Uchuu Kyoudai, whilst I enjoy it, is only 1 episode in, and hasn't really done anything yet. I thought the Zidane gag was fun, but that's it so far. Nothing really standing out about it.

The only good cuts in Korezon are in the OP, which is funnily enough unanimated in its first half. Other than that it has plenty of lazy panning, ugly stills and a general lack of fluidity even during the action scenes. Korezon doesn't have good animation by any stretch of the imagination. The first season had the token sakuga scene all series with a fair amount of action have, and expecting anything more out S2 is foolish - especially after the lackluster first episode.
If you want a DEEN show that actually surprised everyone by having good visuals there's Sankarea, which doesn't have especially good animation either but still managed to look great. They should steal more SHAFT staff if it leads to great art direction like the first episode had.

I really wanted to see the Mitsubishi F2 (or w/e the fighters were) in action, but then one got fucking tentacle raped within 10 seconds and the other one got cockblocked by Berserker before it could fire off anything at Caster. Ugh. The following "dogfight" between Berserker and Gilgamesh was pretty cool though. (Ufotable x Kawamori for the next Macross, fucking fund it).

Saki is pretty good actually. The writing is better than S1, the animation ain't too bad and the soundtrack is kinda nice.
I like the more conservative character designs as well. The ones in S1 were a mixed bag, ranging between kinda cool, ridiculous and outright terrible. It was like the mangaka had never seen casual clothing for girls before. At least this time the outfits seem plausible.
Also, during season 1 I predicted a girl with some sort of dora exploiting power would appear sooner or later, to counter Saki's kan-abillity. Well, she's finally arrived. I hope we'll get to see a match between her and Saki sometime, that would be pretty cool.

Tsuritama was fun! I really like the look and feel of it, and I love fishing, so I'll keep on watching it for a while. Hopefully it won't get tangled up in anything dumb, the whole "save the world" business is already worrying me quite a bit.

Cowboy Bebop is just a show that got everything (music, animation, artstyle, plot coherency, plot pacing, scene pacing/direction, character design) right. Of course, "right" is subjective, but the point is that it was a well made show that appealed to a lot of people.

Also there were a number of episodes that didn't mainly feature Spike and at least one or two that didn't really have a weekly villain at all. I understand you were probably generalizing, but to say the show is JUST Spike beating up bad guys seems unfair to the amount of work that went into each episode.

I'm also watching Upotte and Nazo X. I think I'm gonna drop Upotte after watching the second episode, it seemed a little bit too spoonfed for me, like the characters were really trying to make everything very obvious. Ham acting I think is the theatre term.

Nazo X is fun though, I haven't read the manga but the anime just keeps me guessing. It's covered stages in a relationship that normally take 6 or so episodes in other series. Progress progress progress.

Nyaruko just sucks. Maybe I'm a wee bit cynical, but I can't watch it without thinking of the people in suits in a meeting room going "What's popular with otaku today?" who conceived it. I know most anime are like that, but they're usually not quite so blatant about it.
Also, I think I'm gonna preemptively drop Apollon, if it's going to be more about drama than music.

Jormungand and Lupin are looking great. What a great smile Koko has.

Nyaruko was a really basic net animation long before it was an anime, the guys who made it have a very tongue in cheek sense of humour so I'm pretty sure the otaku-pandering (if you want to call it that) side is actually a parody of shows doing the same.

You can kind of tell by the pace of the plot, how nonsensical some of it is and the 2ch references that it doesn't take itself very seriously.

I think most people are a bit unsure though at this point, I say that above, but after episode 3 it may become really cliche. Nobody knows just yet.

I finally got around to watching Hyouka, and I don't understand the hate it gets. It's slice-of-life the way it should be; interesting characters interacting in interesting ways during their daily lives. Sure, it contains no large overarching plot, its entire cast does not consist of moe girls, it has no fanservice and there is no comedy, but isn't just slice-of-life with interesting characters enough?

I'm going to be so disappointed when this series sells badly. I guess K-On! style is the only kind of slice-of-life accepted nowadays, huh?

K-On! is 'cute girls doing cute things' style slice-of-life, there isn't any comedy to speak of. Nisemonogatari, Hidamari Sketch and Minami-ke were continuations of already existing franchises; if you already have a good userbase, you can sell well regardless of content.
Though, it must be noted that original Minami-ke and Hidamari Sketch aired the season after Lucky Star; I guess I just drew the line a season too early.
I haven't watched either Bakemonogatari or Nisemonogatari, but is Bakemonogatari slice-of-life? I heard a lot of people saying it's really good, but I hadn't heard of any association with slice-of-life until now.

I suppose Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou didn't do badly, though it wasn't a great commercial success. I guess there is still hope.

I think KyoAni has become a bit of a victim of it's own success. They used to be just a good studio, but ever since they became a 'hit machine' it means they can't really make anything without it being compared to stuff like K-ON and Lucky Star and Haruhi.

And then of course you have the religious fans who praise it so much that it puts a lot of people's backs up about it. If it was any other studio doing Hyouka, most people wouldn't care.

As for sales...well, low sales aren't the end of the world. You can enjoy an anime no matter how financially successful it is or isn't. There will always be shows which sell well that don't really deserve to and shows which sell badly and don't deserve to either. Much like any commodity that goes on sale.

Just enjoy it if you enjoy it and ignore it if you don't, that'd be my advice.

They just haven't made good shows the past few titles they have done. It has nothing to do with being compared to Haruhi or Lucky Star. People buy shows they really like. They buy shows that have high rewatch value. Poor sales of Nichijou (and most likely Hyouka) is due to people just not liking the shows, or not liking them enough to buy them.

>low sales aren't the end of the world. You can enjoy an anime no matter how financially successful it is or isn't.
That's cool. Sales are kind of important though. Especially if you are KyoAni. KyoAni needs money to make future anime you know, that should be important to you if you are a fan. KyoAni can't keep producing these low selling low interest series. They'll need to do something more popular after Hyouka if it bombs.
>> No.40613
>>40612

I wasnt really talking about sales for that first point. More about the criticism they get when they release something like Hyouka or Nichijou. People will automatically shit on them because it's not the next Lucky Star or Haruhi.

As for sales being important, well. I'm not really a religious fan of any studio, just the anime they make. KyoAni has made some series I liked and some I haven't liked, just like every single studio out there. So really I don't care if they lose money or close down, it might be sad but it's part of life. Many studios people look up to now were making anime long before there was even much profit in it, so it's not the end of the world if we go back to that, it's an artistic medium after all, not a capitalistic venture. I don't really feel bad for any studio that crumbles because they treated it as such.

Shakugan no Shana 3 aired FOUR FUCKING YEARS after its second season. I used to be a fan, but the long wait decreased my interest in the series so much that when it did finally air, I didn't even watch more than two episodes of it.

Zero no Tsukaima had a similar wait; S1 aired in 2006, S2 aired in 2007, S3 aired in 2008, then nothing happened for ages until S4 finally hit in 2012. I personally dropped ZnT after the first season since it went downhill really fast beyond that, but I can understand if people that did like the other seasons lost interest in ZnT the same way I lost interest in Shana.

Unless a show is received so well that even well beyond it's airing it has active fans (think Haruhi for a recent example) it's still possible to milk it after some time, but fans generally lose interest over time if they're not kept interested by things like new content.

>>40611
>As for sales...well, low sales aren't the end of the world. You can enjoy an anime no matter how financially successful it is or isn't.
Yes, I definitely will enjoy it. I'm the kind of person who will enjoy things regardless of whether it's generally well received or not. But if it's not financially successful, the creator will be strongly discouraged from making such works again, as commercial creators need financially successful works to keep the company alive. It doesn't have to be a Hyouka season 2, but something that's just enjoyable in a calming way that does not use the exact same pattern as other series in the genre.

Not really. The K-ON movie was far more successful than the Haruhi one was. Either way, as a business they can't keep producing anime that is not financially viable, which is why they'll have to do a more popular series soon. I've heard this phrase pretty often. Can you please explain to me what it means?

To my knowledge, 'otaku' refers to the kind of people that watch late-night anime and 'to pander' means to cater to someone's interests. From this I would logically conclude that 'otaku pandering' refers to presenting things that the audience likes. However, the way you're using it makes it sound like there's something wrong with giving viewers something they enjoy, so there must be something wrong with my definition.

Could you clear this up for me?

I don't know about him, but to me pandering would be something like, inserting a bunch of 4chan memes into a work because you know people from 4chan will be consuming it.

Or inserting a ton of tasteless fanservice into an anime, so the people that like that stuff will buy it. Or making it seem like being a NEET is cool, or a status image, or something in an anime, because you know a large portion of your audience are those kinds of people.

Pandering is bad, in my opinion, because rather than actually making something good, something that appeals to everybody, something that is able to stand on its merits, etc, you are making something with the sole intention of 'pandering' to a specific group of people.

>(ie the target audience)?
The target is usually just a general demographic (ie adult males). Pandering is annoying because it inserts stuff that is unnecessary in an otherwise alright show.

For example. I start watching a show. The plot is interesting so far, the setting seems cool, the characters are nice, etc. The protagonist fights in the show using powers. But then it turns out, that in order to get powers to fight, he needs to make out with the heroines each time. It's not like the show is bad other than that. The plot and everything is cool.

But because they want to also target the people that like lewd, gratuitous, fanservice scenes, they add in this 'pandering' element of the protag getting it on with the girls. It doesn't really make any sense why he needs to do this to get powers. It's not like they couldn't have written something better in. For me, it completely ruins the show, because of the pandering bullshit.

When an entire show is simply pandering, like K-ON or something, then you're right, it's not a big deal. I can already tell on the onset that the show is pandering to a specific audience and I'm not part of it. Like I obviously wouldn't watch a BL show if I wasn't into that.

It's when they try to have scenes that pander to specific groups in an otherwise alright and normal show, is when it is annoying.

Sorry if what I'm writing doesn't really make sense to you...

Hyouka honestly intrigued me for the first time this week. Looks like this show will actually have a plot.

Hopefully the mysteries will continue to become more difficult. They're still pretty easy, but it's a bit more interesting compared to the first episode.

I'd say they are retarded more than easy/difficult. An infra-red sensor, really? How the fuck are we supposed to guess that?
A good mystery is solvable by the audience with the information provided and a little bit of lateral thinking, not some obscure bullshit like that.

The sensor was completely fair; the protagonist was explicitly shown noticing the sensor, shortly after that it becomes very clear that the person in the room is hiding something, and shortly after that you see a receiver. Although it didn't hit me those were movement sensors until the protagonist pointed it out (was too busy wondering what the hell the guy was hiding), it was very clear the boxes were related to the mystery and the conclusion that they were devices to detect intruders was entirely reasonable.

Personally, I was less enthusiastic about this episode than I was about the previous two. The plot is nice, but the character interaction required for it didn't feel as interesting as the slice-of-life character interaction.

Uh, yes it is? You can just buy that kind of stuff in normal stores, you know. Hell, he even had a complete pre-made set; by that age, plenty of kids are messing around with the sensors alone, connecting them to makeshift devices and all that. Anybody with the slightest interest in electrical engineering can go a lot further than that in high school. When I was in third year, I had two classmates who were trying to make a Tesla coil together.

Getting something like that working is trivial. And in a situation like the culprit's, it's not at all unlikely that such an easy to execute solution would be used to hide his actions.

>I wish people would just admit they're watching Hyouka because of the cute girls doing well-animated things. There's no shame in it, you don't have to pretend to like the plot or anything.
I'm not saying I'm watching it because of that because previous shows have pointed out that 'cute girls doing well-animated things' just doesn't cut it for me. Most notably K-On!; although I loved Haruhi, Lucky Star and Nichijou, I went into K-On! with high expectations but dropped it after only a couple of episodes. I generally don't care about animation either, to the point where I love shows that are panned for their lackluster animation.

'Cute girls doing well-animated things' by itself doesn't interest me at all. It's hard to explain, but Hyouka is the kind of show that drags you into its relaxing world; ordinary lives are shown in a way that simply makes you want to be there and experience it yourself. And from what I can see, the character interaction is the main component of this; the school itself isn't all that interesting if you think about it, but the characters make it fun.

It's hard to explain. It's a rare feeling I've also had only a couple of times (most notably when reading Clannad for the first time). There's just this atmosphere that makes you relax just watching their daily lives.

The problem isn't with ease of access or it being reasonable for him to have such a device. The problem is he is going through great pains to try and hide his actions when there are a thousand other more simple ways he could do it. The easiest being just smoke somewhere other than school. Plenty of parks and alleys to do it in if he doesn't want to at home. And hell, if he must do it at school just lock the clubroom door and lean out the window.
>> No.40755
>>40754
That's not how Japanese society works. It's not just a matter of location - a smoking student is a delinquent. If someone with so much family tied to education is caught smoking, it will have severe social consequences.

>And hell, if he must do it at school just lock the clubroom door and lean out the window.
That's what he did. But he's likely not the only person with the key to the clubroom and people might knock perhaps even knowing he's inside, so he has to be prepared for an emergency situation.

We're used to a society where it's normal for kids to smoke (which is likely the reason it took me so long to understand what he was hiding), but it's different in Japan.
>> No.40756
>>40755
Don't pretend to be some kind of expert on Japanese society. Smoking is far more prevalent in Japan than it is in the US, Canada, UK, etc. Don't feed me bullshit about how "we're" used to kids smoking, but it's not like that in Japan.

Finally got around to watching Ep 3. Shit I wish I hadn't been spoiled about it on here, as I thought the mystery was pretty good this time.

The infrared sensors were pretty reasonable, though unexpected. Reasonable in that you can get those for cheap pretty easily. So was the motive for the 3rd year to go great lengths to cover up the fact that he's a smoker.

Also watched Ep 6 of Accel World. The battle betwee Taku and the others from the Blue Legion left me befuddled. Snow Black dueling him at the end was also a "wat" moment.

So what were your favourite shows this season, /bun/? I personally only watched Apollon and Lupin (dropped Saint Seiya), but I loved them, and I would recommend them to anyone who likes their characters to be engaging, their music to be good and their art and animation to be well done.

I've been curious about Jormungand (which also has a finished manga, hurray!), Tsuritama and Space Bros (which I never started). However, I would prefer a show that is quick to watch, with a focus on plot (and maybe some action). This Hi10 thing is really neat! Shows don't even use 2GBs of hard drive space!

>So what were your favourite shows this season, /bun/?
My favorite this season is Fate/Zero, by far. For second place, I'd say Jormungand.

>I've been curious about Jormungand (which also has a finished manga, hurray!), Tsuritama and Space Bros (which I never started). Jormungand is...unusual, let's call it that. It's rather chaotic and hard to follow at the start (not sure if it's bad directing or purposely to convey their chaotic lifestyle and how Jonathan is just suddenly thrown into it). It just follows the daily lives of arms dealer Koko Hekmatyar and her crew consisting of elite ex-soldiers and the like. She travels to various countries to sell her wares to those who will make worst use of it, often getting into conflict resulting in her crew killing a bunch of people. It's a bit hard to describe; don't expect too much action, and the action generally isn't the over-the-top awesome kind but more steering towards the realistic 'sit in the same place and keep firing bullets for two minutes' style...though 'realistic' is also a misnomer. Just watch it to find out if you'll like it. (Second season's coming this fall, by the way.)

As for a recommendation, what do you mean by "quick to watch"? For 'focus on plot with some action', I'd say Fate/Zero fits the bill (though it's strongly recommended you read Fate/stay night before watching if you haven't read it yet, as it both spoils f/sn and is more difficult to follow without knowledge of concepts from f/sn).

If I had to choose one favorite, I'd say Kuroko no Basuke. I loved Space Bros and Tsuritama as well, so if you're interested in them you should definitely go watch. Especially Space Bros, since I remember reading it would be 48 episodes and you can catch up before falling too far behind.

I'm way behind on Space Bros, but just from the five episodes I've seen so far, it's far and away my favorite show from last (i.e. Spring 2012) season. It's incredibly funny, but also very touching. Mutta is just such a great main character.

Tasogare Otome x Amnesia wasn't too bad either. The first seven episodes weren't anything to write home about, but from episode eight onward it was very good. Oonuma Shin (the director) might as well be called Shinbo-lite in the way he likes to throw around experimental visuals, and it worked pretty well in the show (as opposed to C³). Anyway, it was a pretty darn good romance show, and Yuuko was a wonderful heroine. Her VA did a great job.

Finished Lupin, Tsuritama and Apollon. I don't know if it's because I had to wait a month to watch the final episodes of all the shows, but they all felt rather underwhelming, on different levels.

The one I was disappointed with the most was Tsuritama. I enjoyed the show, but it's far from being a masterpiece. Last episode felt pretty unrealistic. Urara caused so much trouble and all they do is... nothing. Everyone saying what they'll do after their adventure was extremely silly, felt really staged. I know it sounds dumb considering it is staged since this is a work of fiction, but I felt like the only thing they missed was looking straight at the camera. The scene couldn't have flown more unnaturally. Urara is fucking gay. Tsuritama is ok and all but it really reeks of fujoshi pandering and I can't help but imagine all the praise it gets comes from girls.

Apollon's final episode felt lacking (moreso after reading the last volume and seeing everything they skipped, and what they changed), but still managed to get a few tears from me. Bromance is the purest form of love. Also, that one guy needs a new haircut and a change of clothes.

Lupin's felt too short, but I enjoyed it anyway. I don't really have anything to say other than I really liked this show and Oscar was a fag I initially loved to hate and ended up hating to love, and I'm going to miss seeing him. Also teared up with this episode, in the scene where they were in the car with Aisha. Fujiko's bright face and words, and then her playing in the sea for Aisha to see... I need to check if the OST is out now.

Gotta watch Jormungand now and catch up with Omega and Space Brothers.

So, I decided to start watching accel world after putting it off for so long. Someone explain this shit that went down in episode 4/5.

1; Haru and the butterfly bitch stay disconnected from the global net to avoid random burst link confrontations and stay hidden. For some odd reason, they HAVE to connect to private servers like the school's, when they are inside the school.

2; She's in the hospital, and apparently they have to remain connected to the hospitals server. It made it clear that only people who where physically in the hospital in real life could connect to them through that server.

3; Taku comes in and starts a fight with Haru, they go into the burst link world.

4; Inside there is lots of other competitors/players/people. Even though they are only connected together through the private hospital server.

Don't think you have to worry about a second season when they're done with the source material, spinoff aside.

Hyouka is by far the show I've enjoyed the most this year. I never expected Takemoto and Gatoh to work together at KyoAni again, and I'm glad to see they're as good a team as they used to be. There's no reason to complain about FMP anymore if they produce stuff like this instead. Kadokawa can keep being an asshole about their IP for all I care, KyoAni's talented enough to make an excellent show out of an average mundane mystery novel.

I'm not that guy (in fact this is probably my first post in this thread) but I've finished Hyouka so I'll go ahead and put words in his mouth.

Hyouka was extremely dull. Yes, the story is not very interesting. It takes a "mystery of the week/two weeks" approach, but the mystery is never exciting or intriguing in any way, once the answer is obvious you get to spend 20 minutes of the protagonist explaining the solution to the female lead, etc etc. Each individual episode of Hyouka is not worth watching, and as a whole there is nothing extra. I mean, you could basically put any episode as stand-alone with a brief introduction to the characters. There's no over-arching plot or character development or anything.

The ending wasn't beautiful or moving or anything like that. It was boring. No climactic moments, no resolution, no nothing. Of course that's to be expected since there was no tension or buildup or anything at all that needed resolving, Jesus Christ but still, you'd expect a finale episode to be special in some way. Any way at all.

The only good thing about Hyouka is that it is very pretty to watch. The character designs are nice and there are five million frames per episode.
>> No.44329
Last episode of Uchuu Kyoudai was very touching. I'm glad I've kept up with the 40 episodes so far.
