There's too much good stuff this season. I haven't had time to watch everything that sounded interesting, but here's some opinions from what I've seen so far:
It's Pretty Much my Fault that I'm not Popular A slice-of-life/bitter comedy about Tomoko, a girl who had hoped to change her image and become popular in high school, but it never really happened. It doesn't help that she's introverted, not particularly attractive (and even more amazingly, the artist actually drew her as such), and her main hobbies are video games, browsing the internet, and reading. Two months into high school, and she's become "that weird girl who's always by herself", spending most of her free time in the corner being bitter towards the world. This is almost painful to watch sometimes. On one hand, it kind of is her own fault that she's a step away from being an outcast, but on the other hand, it's hard to blame her when I'd probably react in the same way to most of those situations, only to reflect on it later and realize how terrible it was. This series probably isn't for everyone, but I'd recommend checking out the first episode. It's pretty representative of what you're going to get. The OP is pretty rockin' too
The Adventures of Loli Jesus In the beginning, God separated the light from the darkness, and there was evening and there was morning -- the first day. etc., etc. By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. And on the eight day, God forsook the world. A voice rang out from the heavens, "Heaven and Hell are overcrowded, and soon this world will follow. Sorry for the inconvenience, but I've failed." From that day on, no new children were born, and no one died. Even as they lost their limbs, even as their vital functions ceased, and the flesh rotted from their bodies, those who should have been dead kept moving until their bodies were no longer physically capable of doing so. And so, God granted one final miracle to Earth: the gravekeepers. People who were buried by a gravekeeper would truly die, and their souls would be put to rest. The series begins with Ai, the gravekeeper for her village. She took over the duty from her deceased mother, who was the first person that she buried. Everyone in the village was very kind to her, and another family took her in, raising her as if she were their own daughter. Then a man showed up at the village, and killed everyone there. Well, he stopped them from moving at least; after all, only a gravekeepr can truly kill them. And so, after making a pathetic attempt at attacking the man and having her face shoved into the ground, she went back home and cried herself to sleep. The next day, the man had drug all the bodies out to the graveyard, and Ai fulfilled her duty of putting to rest everyone she'd ever known and loved. ...and that's just episode 1. This series is depressing (just in case you hadn't guessed yet), but it's been really good so far. After 4 episodes, I'm still not sure where it's going, but I'm hoping for a post-apocalyptic loli Jesus going around putting the last remnants of humanity to rest. Outside of the plot, the artwork is absolutely gorgeous. I could watch this for the art alone.
British Girls in Japanese High School 4koma slice-of-life/comedy about two British girls who move to Japan for different reasons and are going to high school there. The core group of friends also includes a Japanese girl who went to the U.K. to stay with the family of one of the British girls for a summer when she was little and has been obsessed with British culture ever since (conversely, the British girl she stayed with was enamored with Japanese culture), and the implied yuri pair of a boyish girl and a quiet, refined girl. Actually, there's a fair amount of yuri implications in this series in general. Anyways, it's got some glorious Engrish at times, but other than that, it's pretty much what you'd expect from a high school 4koma adaptation.
High School Porn X Plot S2 I'd assume you know what you're getting into with this one. I was worried that season 2 would just end up with generic harem antics, but it's actually been pretty good so far. We got Kiba's backstory and a mission to destroy the Excalibur fragments that fell into the hands of the fallen angels, and meanwhile there's the implication that the white dragon who was mentioned back at the end of S1 may be making an appearance soon. The nudity has certainly been ramped up for this season, but the plot continues to chug along at a steady pace.
God of Galge S3 Once again, presumably you've seen the first two seasons if you're considering watching this. It's more of the same, although this time, the self-proclaimed "God of Dating Sims" now has to go back and reconquer some of his previous targets who are hosting Roman Goddesses. He needs their power to beat the German Demons. Two of the girls are actually kind of new, since they only appeared in the manga (I think, at least; episode 1 has some flashbacks of his interactions with them, but they never showed up in the previous seasons as far as I can recall).
Ball Joints and Boat Lights S3 I'm...just not sure about this reboot. They went back and completely retconned the events of the previous two seasons (it's not consistent with the events of the manga either). The same dolls are still dead at least, but the methods of death are completely different, and Kirakishou has more or less been painted as the main villain with Suigintou being probably evil and the other dolls all being pure good (the relationships between the dolls were way more complicated in the previous season and the manga). There's also some alternate dimension stuff going on. The story of this one focuses on Jun in a dimension where he never wound Shinku, but then in college, the Jun from the original world sends him materials to build a new Shinku because the one in the original world is trapped by Kirakishou or something. I was really hoping for some more Highlander dolls, but it looks like we're getting weird dimensional travel stuff that probably is never going to make sense instead.
Futari wa Suffering Time It's like Detective Opera Milky Holmes, but without any detective opera scenarios or Milky Holmes. Oh wait, what's left then? Slapstick humor? Nope, they took that out too. Instead, we have two new girls who claim to aspire to be great detectives like Milky Holmes (hahaha). I feel like this could've been a decent idea if they'd actually do detective work, but they're really just detective-themed magical girls who go around fighting the forces of evil. After episode 1, the new "phantom thieves" aren't even going around pulling grand heists; they're instead committing petty crimes to try and get the detectives' attention and then they have a big battle. If you'd been dying to see Pretty Cure Aqua get into a fight with Laser Wolverine, this might be the perfect series for you, but other than that I can't say I'd recommend it to anyone. |
