It's simply the best visual novel adaptation I've seen, and it's proof that it IS possible to create an interesting series from a VN without skipping through tons of stuff. After countless shitty adaptations, it's refreshing to see one done well, both being very good by itself and being true to its source material.
Honorable mention goes to No Game, No Life, which was great fun, but it had the misfortune of being in the same year as UBW.
>Worst Anime: Selector Spread WIXOSS, or: How to take a series with good potential and run it into the ground. The drama becomes bad and cliched, tons of elements are added that add little to the story as a whole, many things are left unexplained, and the ending is complete bullshit. Also, that cryptic scene from Infected episode 1 that seemed to be the end of the story, which drew a lot of speculation? Yeah, it has nothing to do with anything. The tower? Meaningless. Ruuko's family situation? Unrelated to it all. There's red herrings and there's just straight up bullshit.
Honorable mention goes to Brynhildr, which did great but fucked it all up at the end.
>Surprise: Imocho. Yeah, the fanservice show. I tend not to like fanservice shows because they're usually really cliched and there's not really much to find in such shows except for weak fanservice and sometimes a bit of humor, but then came Imocho which broke the mold in every possible way. What originally attracted attention to it (and I have to admit it was curiosity about this that made me start watching) was that its fanservice was extremely blatant. No coincidentally walking in on girls changing, no tripping and accidentally touching boobs, just straight on semi-porn. But the reason I'm listing this as best surprise is the fact that it actually has plot, characters it makes you care about and surprisingly good drama. 'Watching for the plot' is often joked about, but this time I was genuinely watching for the plot.
>Most disappointing: Gokukoku no Brynhildr. But not the usual 'I was looking forward before it aired' kind of disappointment; rather, I knew nothing about Brynhildr before I started watching it, and I liked it more than I'd expected. The reason it's in 'most disappointing' is because it manages to completely screw everything up in the last 2-3 episodes. A real waste of an otherwise good series.
Honorable mention goes to Selector Spread Wixoss, but it was so disappointing that 'worst anime' was the more fitting category.
NOTE: Yuuki Yuuna has not finished airing yet. I don't think it'll be a contender for any of these categories, but if the ending is surprising enough (in either a good or a bad way) it could. Hard to beat Wixoss in terms of 'shitty ending', though. |
