Why are so many people bothered by icons on desktops? Weren't desktops made to put stuff on them?
>> No.16437
As expected, mine (>>16421) was the cutest.

>>16429
Certainly they were at one point, but now that we have that search/run thing in the Start Menu I don't actually use my desktop shortcuts at all, so really I might as well get rid of them and have the desktop just be there for admiring.
I won't, though, because a desktop with no icons looks somehow lonely.

Well, yeah, but when it's just a cluttered, disorganized mess, it just looks bad and makes things hard to find. Make folders to put some stuff in, and just leave the major stuff on the desktop.

Personally, I disabled icons altogether and just put everything in a huge "Everything" folder with subfolders upon subfolders. Makes my desktop look nice and clean and it's easy to find things.

I like the idea of having three recycle bins though. I run out of space in mine all the time, and it's such a pain to dig through it and pick out the less important things to send to the recycling partition.
>> No.16506
>>16479
How can you run out of space in the recycle bin?!
>> No.16520
>>16506
you pretty much can't. the recycle bin is just a collection of links (not sure if it's soft or hard) to files that are marked for deletion. not sure how NTFS is actually implemented, but I'm pretty sure even the most mundane implementation simply involves a bunch of pointer files marking a file for "used", "deleted" and "unused". When you delete a file, it's probably marked as "deleted" and its attribute file is probably linked to the "recycle bin", then all the blocks it was using get marked as "deleted" (so no program can read/write to them) and "deleted" blocks remain unreadable/unwritable until they're either deleted from the recycle bin(you look at the extended attributes for the file/folder and start marking all the blocks as unused, alongside the block for the attribute file so no logical trace of the file remains) or undeleted (you go to the extended attribute file and start updating its immediate parent, mark the file and its blocks as "used/in use" instead of "deleted" and voila, your file is back). So the recycle bin really only needs to hold the information on "which files are deleted" rather than "all the data that's supposed to be in the recycle bin".
...So the only way you can run out of space on the recycle bin is if your hard drive is full of files and you delete every single one of those files (or some inane limit on the recycle bin put in for some security reason). Then it's just a full hard drive, except you can't read/write anything in the recycle bin without really deleting/undeleting something.

I was mostly being facetious, but when dragging very large items to the recycling bin I do get a message of something like "This folder is too big to fit in the recycling bin. Do you want to delete it permanently?"
>> No.16524
>>16520
...except non-NTFS files (from USB sticks and the like) also go into the recycling bin. It's very possible to fill it up, although having three of them won't help, and you'll still have a full disk when it's full.

I shift-delete everything anyways.
>> No.16532
>>16523
oh god, windows really does that, doesn't it.
why would microsoft do that? NTFS is their own goddamn file system, they can add whatever flag they want to it. It's much easier to just mark a file as "unusable" and link the files needed to re-enable it in the recycle bin.
>> No.16537
>>16532
The maximum size of the recycling bin can be changed. I was under the impression the "too large" wasn't a result of any filesystem limitation, just this size limit being exceeded. I think they added it so that people don't end up with recycling bins that occupy 75% of their HD because they never thought to empty it.
