I don't have my Umineko images anymore to support this thread but I like seeing it everyday so I'm going to bump it.

What happened to the lovingly hand-drawn sprites and lovingly hand-photoshop-filtered backgrounds?!

Rejected by "fans" (likely the same ones complaining about how Umineko doesn't end the typical mystery way they want) and replaced by generic mainstream art that is more to their liking.

I like both versions, though I still prefer the original art due to nostalgia.

I don't understand why /jp/ elitists hate the ps3 art so much though. Sure, it's generic, but that's not always a bad thing. All of the characters look great and the backgrounds are detailed and beautiful. Plus it comes with CGs and voices, so you get to experience Umineko again in a nice new way. You all should at least give it a chance.

It's for the same reason "elitists" dislike the Higurashi anime. When considered on its own, it's not actually a bad series. It's just bad in comparison to its source material. The same goes for the new Umineko sprites; there isn't really anything wrong with them, just the fact that they replace far, far more expressive sprites.

Just look at this image. These are all neutral expressions for when the characters aren't displaying any specific emotion. Yet they all look radically different; the characters' personalities shine through in their expressions.
