There's a lot of little things about it that annoy me, but I still mostly enjoyed playing it overall, except for the ending. FFXIII was the last FF game I played too, so I didn't really have high hopes for Remake, plus I was in the group that wanted SE to stick fairly close to the original, which as it turned out they weren't entirely going to do.
I feel like they've changed the music a bit too much, there's lots of overdone orchestral stuff for example, and I don't think a lot of it either fits the scenes they're used for or sufficiently reflects the originals. Some of the English voice acting is a bit flat, and features excessive amounts of giggling & breathing, which I find painful to listen to. I also strongly dislike the fact they call Aeris 'Aerith', I know that was her name in the original Japanese, but it was Aeris in English, and it just sounds better. Aerith sounds like they're talking with a lisp, it's fucking obnoxious. The way they pronounce 'Midgar' is a bit annoying as well, and if they end up pronouncing Yuffie's name as 'Yoofie' again when we get her in the next part I'm going to lose my shit. The dialogue isn't exactly top shelf either, there's lots of generic JRPG drivel in there, I really feel like it needed some better writing. I'm not totally fond of the way some characters are either, for example Tifa has turned into a spineless, inconsistent wet blanket, and she + Aeris together have become insufferable, Reno has been turned into a massive twat, and there's a new chara called Roche who is utterly over the top, irritating and pointless. Also, Jessie's interest in Cloud is way too obvious and overdone. And the ending is abysmal. I won't spoil it, but it takes the existing story and just drives it over a cliff. Seems like they're trying to shoehorn something into the story that doesn't belong there, and it ends up being totally nonsensical.
On a more positive note, it does look nice, mostly. The new combat system is a little bit hit & miss, guarding and blocking could stand to be a bit sharper and it would be nice if enemies didn't all gang up on whichever character you happen to be controlling (especially annoying when controlling Aeris), but it's good for the most part. The whole Honeybee Inn thing was fun, there were some worries that would get neutered, but it's still there, albeit the ability to find items to make Cloud prettier seems to have been removed, unless I missed something. It's also cool to spend more time hanging around Midgar, though again, albeit that tends to consist of some tedious sidequesting. Spending more time with Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie is also cool, that's something I always thought the original could have done with more of, they're kind of an important part of the early story, but then end up getting turfed reasonably quickly, even if that does help set-up the assault on Shinra HQ. Hanging around with Jessie in particular I really enjoyed, as you might guess, despite the afore-mentioned overdone affection for Cloud. She was always one of my favourite characters, even if she was only a minor side-note in the plot overall. I quite like the UI in the character menus too, it looks kinda Star Ocean-esque to me. The screen transition to upgrade weapon skills is hideous though, like seriously epilepsy inducing.
So yeah, bit of a mixed bag. It's still FFVII at heart, despite all the changes, so I found some enjoyment in it, but it's not what it could have been. But again, I wanted something different to what SE were doing, so I guess it's not entirely aimed at me. Might be best to wait for it to come down in price if you're on the fence about picking it up. |
